Elephant’s Dream

TUESDAY 11 OCTOBER, 18:15 – 20:15

Universiteit van Amsterdam | ROOM REC-M 1.03

Set in war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo, Elephant’s Dream is a breath-taking documentary depicting everyday lives of the country’s street-level civil servants. Kristof Bilsen‘s documentary is a long overdue testimony to the courage and resilience of the men and women neglected by conventional portrayals of the country. Taking Henriette, the Post Office Counter Clerk, Simon, the Train Station Officer and Lieutenant, the Chief Fire Officer out of international oblivion, the documentary successfully achieves the feat of taking its viewers far beyond the habitual clichés and into the tough path of a self-reflexive voyage.

Brought to you by the IS Academie Programme and the Governance and Inclusive Development  programme group at the University of Amsterdam, Elephant’s Dream screening was formally introduced by Kristof Bilsen and followed by an open discussion about the issues raised in the documentary facilitated by Professor Tom De Herdt (Political Scientist at Antwerp University, latest publication ‘Real Governance and Practical Norms in Africa’, co-edited with Jean-Pierre Olivier de Sardan).
