TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 16, DISCUSSION EVENING
Manning up Women or Resisting Pornification? Interrogating Daily Sexism and Misogyny
The IS Academie Education and International Development organised a discussion evening on the 16th of September from 19.30 onwards at PC Hoofthuis in Amsterdam. The discussion evening aimed to generate dialogue as to (new) forms of sexism and misogyny, and the possible implications thereof for education. The evening began with a viewing of the BBC documentary “Blurred lines: the new battle of the sexes”. After that, our discussant Kristen Cheney shared her reflections which opened up the floor for a lively debate!
Blurred Lines – the new battle of the sexes
From bomb threats sent to campaigners for more females on banknotes to sexually explicit pop videos. From extreme laddism at universities to rape jokes in the school yard… Kirsty Wark explores whether there’s a new culture abroad in which it’s acceptable to write about, talk about, and feature women in a sexually offensive, even abusive way. Or whether the female of the species just needs to ‘man up’ and get used to the 21st century world.
