It is 15 years since the signing of a peace agreement in Northern Ireland. The agreement contains many features of what has become known as ‘liberal peacebuilding’, but how successful has it been in transforming the conflict?
On May 15, 2013, the IS Academie Education and International Development organised a public lecture titled ‘Does Liberal Peacebuilding Work and is it Sustainable?: The Role of Education in Peacebuilding in Northern Ireland ’ at De Balie. Prof. Alan Smith (University of Ulster, Northern Ireland) presented on some of the challenges that remain in securing a sustainable peace in Northern Ireland, including implications for the role of education in broader UN peacebuilding efforts. Charles de Vries (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) performed as discussant.
